What is a Safer Pod?:

A Safer Pod is a visual, portable and self-contained 360-degree security surveillance unit designed to help prevent crime and anti-social behaviour. The pod provides 24/7 monitoring and acts as a highly visible deterrent, equipped with 105-decibel sirens and strobe lighting that can be activated when required. Its presence supports businesses by discouraging opportunistic theft, increasing staff confidence and reinforcing a proactive approach to safety.

A recent installation at Matalan Williamson Square has demonstrated how targeted business support can deliver meaningful results during peak trading periods.

The Challenge:

Matalan partnered with Liverpool BID Company to trial a Safer Pod within their city centre store as part of a wider effort to reduce loss and create a more secure retail environment. Positioned strategically near the childrenswear department, the pod provided a visible deterrent and supported the store’s existing shrink‑reduction strategy.

This case study outlines the impact of the pod during the trial period and highlights how BID‑supported interventions can strengthen retailer resilience.

Objectives:

  • Reduce theft-related losses in a high‑risk area of the store
  • Strengthen the store’s existing shrink strategy
  • Create a visible presence to deter theft and improve customer and staff confidence

The Results:

The pod was installed close to the childrenswear department between November 2025 and April 2026, covering two stock count periods:

  • Period 1: 1 Nov 2025 – Jan 2026 (8‑week average)
  • Period 2: Jan 2026 – April 2026 (11‑week average)

During this time, the store experienced significant weekly losses across most departments. However, childrenswear — the area directly supported by the pod — remained stable.

Children’s department:

  • 0% change in average weekly loss
  • Losses remained stable despite wider store challenges

All other departments:

  • 90% increase in average weekly loss from one count to the next

Overall impact:

  • While the store saw a notable rise in shrink elsewhere, the pod helped maintain stability in the area it was protecting
  • The pod contributed to a stronger sense of surveillance and supported staff in managing risk

Key Takeaways:

The trial demonstrates that targeted interventions can make a measurable difference. Even as overall shrink rose, the department supported by the POD held steady. From a loss‑prevention perspective, this indicates:

  • The pod acted as an effective deterrent
  • Its presence contributed to maintaining performance in a high‑risk category
  • It supported the store’s wider shrink strategy during a challenging period

In this context, the pod can be considered a success — it helped prevent losses from escalating in the area it was designed to protect.

This trial marks just the beginning of how Safer Pods can support businesses across Liverpool city centre.
