Xīn Nián Kuài Lè! 新年快乐 Happy Chinese New Year! Join Culture Liverpool in 2021 as we welcome the Year of the Ox during online Chinese New Year celebrations.

Nestled on the south side of Liverpool city centre is the iconic Chinese Ceremonial Archway. Standing tall and visible from afar, it provides an impressive entrance to Chinatown, home to the oldest Chinese community in Europe.

A popular tourist attraction, it is a beacon of fortune and the focal point for people to gather to celebrate the annual Chinese New Year Festival. The streets adorned with Chinese lanterns, the lion and unicorn displaying their strength and sharing good luck through traditional dance and of course the noisy firecrackers to ward off bad luck and delight the crowds.

Whilst a number of traditions remain, including the symbolic Chinese lanterns decorating the heart of Chinatown and buildings lit up red in honour of this age-old tradition, the rest of this year’s celebrations will be somewhat different.

As 2021 welcomes the year of the Ox, Culture Liverpool are inviting you to join them online and enjoy the celebrations from the comfort and safety of your home.

From Friday 12 to Sunday 14 February, a selection of activities, archive footage and a gallery of images from years gone by have been shared, courtesy of Culture Liverpool’s cultural partners.

We hope in 2022, we can all get back together and celebrate Chinese New Year in a more exciting and creative way. So for now, Culture Liverpool look forward to welcoming you online.
