→ Liverpool Biennial 2021 x Lush Liverpool Spa

Liverpool Biennial x Lush Liverpool Spa
Wednesday to Sunday, 11am – 6 pm
Booking and admission: Booking is suggested. Free Entry.

In line with Government guidance, the Biennial has opened the doors to Liverpool, welcoming visitors to safely enjoy the UK’s largest free festival of contemporary art.

From Wednesday 19 May until Sunday 27 June, Liverpool Biennial is taking over Lush Liverpool Spa’s third floor, previously known as the Christmas Floor, and reveals the transformation into a gallery space hosting four installations of the 11th Biennial edition, ‘The Stomach and the Port’.

The four commissions on the third floor call for the end of violence and advocate for politics of care among humans and beyond. From Christopher Crozier’s exploration of the global oil economy’s impact on the Caribbean through drawing to Ayesha Hameed’s video installation, charting the first undersea telegraphic cable between India and Britain during the British Empire.

A key work is Neo Muyanga’s A Maze in Grace (2021) which traces back the history of the hymn “Amazing Grace” to its origins within the city of Liverpool, home to its composer, English slaver-turned-abolitionist John Newton, from where the song then travelled to the US, becoming an emblem of the Civil Rights Movement. Meanwhile, Jenna Sutela focuses on gestation, presenting a conversation between imaginary organisms with both organic and synthetic attributes, one of whom lives inside the other.

→ Queer The City: Drag Cabaret, LightNight at Lush Liverpool Spa

On Friday 21 May between 5pm – 9pm, several drag artists will perform at Lush Liverpool Spa as part of the Queer The City: Drag Cabaret which has been commissioned by Liverpool BID Company and Homotopia. For those who won’t attend in person, there will be live streams available via the Homotopia Festival and Lush Liverpool Spa social media channels.

Liverpool arts will be “officially open” with the return of the one night only arts festival, LightNight. The festival offers an after hours culture crawl, with major arts venues reopening and events taking place throughout the city centre. The hybrid event also has an online offering for those who want to attend at home.

There are lots of in-store activities at Lush Liverpool Spa including a live DJ. There’s plenty to do, whether you fancy a coffee with a Queen in the Lush coffee shop, have your heart set on getting your makeup done by one of Lush’s in-store make-up artists or want to send a bath bomb down the newly installed bath bomb run. There’s something to satisfy all of your senses.
