Explore one of Britain’s most important and radical artists through an uncompromising body of work and experience first-hand how Sickert chronicled Britain during a period of rapid change.
Awarded 5 stars by the Guardian and 4 stars by the Telegraph Sickert: A Life in Art is the largest retrospective of the artist’s work to have been held in the UK for more than 30 years. It’s impossible to imagine what the course of modern and contemporary British art would have looked like without the radical influence of Walter Richard Sickert (1860-1942).
Never an artist to stand still, no matter his subject; he always pushed himself exploring technique, colour and atmosphere. Yet he isn’t a household name. Perhaps it’s because his work evolved so much throughout his career or maybe because he didn’t always choose to paint the prettiest scene and explored dark subjects.
Whatever the reason, our acclaimed retrospective showcases more than 100 loaned paintings from national and international collections and more than 200 drawings from the Walker’s own collection, many of which have never been displayed before. Reason enough to introduce yourself to Sickert.
